Works on Paper: Tidepool Compositions

Lost in the depth of an ever changing world, drawing and explorations of abstraction led me to visualize the expanse of this natural world. Drawing studies and observations are recorded by the coastlines New England and the Pacific Northwest, and then further developed in my studio.

“....the sea and the spinning planets and an expanding universe, all bound together by the elastic string of time. It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and then back to the tide pool again.”

–John Steinbeck, The Log from the Sea of Cortez

Works on Paper: Enso

In Zen school of Buddhism, enso is a circle that is made with one movement of a brush with ink on paper. The strength of the line, its splashes, rugged bumps and seamless flow are filled with subtle, yet complex nuances. Each example reflects the uniqueness of the creator and the moment in time it is expressed. The artist’s mind is revealed along with their acceptance of imperfection.

While the act of making the mark has a spiritual context, I learned it is also very light hearted, full of humor and free expression. What is written alongside traditional scrolls are statements such as: “What is This?,” “I find Myself on the Verge of a Usual Mistake,” ”The Perfection of Imperfection,” “The Magic of Every Moment.”
